How is it that we have been here a week already?! Oh, how I wish we could make time stop. I'm not ready for it to be over! Sigh.
Here we are in Florence, our hotel is the centrally located Palazzo dal Borgo just around the corner from the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. We quickly get settled and a group of us head over to the Mercato Centrale - Central Market - to stroll through the outdoor leather market and get some lunch at the large indoor food market. Local produce & everyday goods piled high in a covered, 19th-century iron & glass market hall.
In other words, it was perfection.
A busy afternoon, we met back with the group for a Renaissance walking tour of Florence. So much to see... the Ponte Vecchio, the Piazza della Signoria, the home of the famous poet Dante'. We ended our tour at the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo's powerful and breathtaking 14-foot David.
After the Accademia, (even though it wasn't a planned group dinner night), Sarah & Amanda arranged for an authentic pizza dinner for those who were interested. Of course we ALL were. ha. The restaurant Il Pizzaiuolo, was truly a back door experience, off the beaten path, far away from the tourist crowds. It was so delicious and such a fun night!
We all walked back toward our hotel happy, and as we walked through the Piazza della Signoria, I may have broken out in song with a Puccini aria from La Boheme. I'm not sure, but I think it was the wine. Or the electric, yet sublime Light in the Piazza...
Nobody with a dream should come to Italy. No matter how dead and buried you think it is, in Italy, it will rise and walk again.
